PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to output a proper gradation video in accordance with a screen and its surrounding situation in a front projector. SOLUTION: The projection type video display device has a means for measuring brightness (luminance) of the screen and its surrounding and setting a gradation of an output of the projector is accordance with the measured result. Specifically, a constant and proper gradation expression can be achieved by changing the setting of the brightness and the setting of the gamma. The device can achieve the most ideal setting by measuring the brightness (the luminance) of the following three points i.e., a bright part and a dark part on the screen, and the surrounding of the screen.
