The mobile ad hoc network includes a plurality of wireless mobile nodes (12) and a plurality of wireless communication links (14) connecting the nodes (1 2) together. the method includes building and updating route table (102) at eac h node (12) by managing and controlling the application of either proactive or reactive route discovery and their respective associated processes to define and maintain routes in the network. The method also includes collecting and storing route stability information (104) at each node (12), predicting rout e stability over time based upon the route stability information (106), and switching to the other of the proactive and reactive route discovery and the associated processes when predicted route stability reaches a first transiti on parameter (108, 110). Moreover, the method preferably includes switching bac k to the first one of the proactive and reactive route discovery and the associated processes when predicted route stability reaches a second transition parameter.
