A stamping press has an upper frame, an upper tool holder, a lower tool holder and a ram drive unit. The ram drive unit (23) is fixed at one end of the upper frame (19) symmetrically with respect to a vertical longitudinal central plane of the press. The ram drive unit (23) preferably comprises an eccentric shaft (69) for reciprocating the ram via a connecting rod (93) a flywheel (75) loosely mounted on the eccentric shaft and a clutch and brake unit (77) for controlling the flywheel.
