An assembly sub-divides a moving paper web surrendered (2) from a roll (3) as it passes through a longitudinal cutter (12). The cutting unit esp. produces a paper web of predetermined minimum width (b). The cutting assembly subdivides the moving web into two or more webs which are subsequently wound into individual rolls. The cutter unit has a laser knife directed over a width of 0.5 to 3 mm. The laser knife (12) is located between two rollers (5, 13). Surplus material is trapped in a collector container (18).
