Tooth breakage monitoring method for escalator or moving walkway using comparison of visual images of toothed surface

The monitoring method uses optical scanning or the toothed surface (10) at the escalator entry or exit region, e.g. via a pair of cameras (9) on opposite sides of the escalator (1) or walkway at its base (8), with comparison of the obtained images by an image processing system, for detecting a variation from the original condition, used for generation of a warning and/or for bringing the escalator or moving walkway to a standstill. An Independent claim for a breakage monitoring device for the teeth cooperating with an escalator or moving walkway is also included.
