Medical patient data management system with a central or decentralized patient record store to which secure access is provided by the patient or a patient controlled access code. When a doctor wishes to carry out an examination he accesses the medical system to input the planned procedure. A comparison system, especially an expert system is then used to determine if any relevant previous examination has been carried out within a given time period. Writing-up of an examination can only be undertaken in conjunction with relevant documentation and the results of the examination. The patient record can be stored on a portable writable CD-ROM or DVD with access granted using biometric identification (fingerprint, or iris) and or password authorization.
