Banknote paper has a printed surface (13) with print surfaces (14) within this print surface that are printed using an negative type printing process in which the paper is pushed at high pressure into engraved markings on the print plate that contain ink. Independent claims are made for a method for printing banknotes using such a negative type printing process, a print plate for use with such printing methods and a method for manufacturing the print plate using an engraving process.
