The cast or turned ring carrier (1) may be a ring with a groove to accommodate a piston ring. The piston may be manufactured by casting with the ring carrier in place. A profiled ring-shaped cooling channel may be formed by a core (2) which is melted out during the piston casting process. There are channels for inlet and outlet of engine oil. The ring-shaped cooling channel has thickened portions (3) which extend outward to touch the inside diameter of the piston ring carrier.
