The present invention relates to an assay for determining if an individual is susceptible to developing cancer or has cancer. The present invention also relates to an isolated nucleotide sequence, a vector comprising the nucleotide sequence and a method for treating an individual susceptible to developing cancer or having cancer. In particular, the method of the present invention comprises determining the methylated state of a nucleotide sequence having the sequence of Figure 1 or Figure 2, or a functionally equivalent homolog or fragment thereof.
