PURPOSE: Provided are thulium ion(Tm3+)-doped silicate glass excellent in fluorescence emission at 1.4micrometer, durability and water resistance, formation of optical waveguides, and connectivity properties of transmission optical fiber. CONSTITUTION: The Tm3+ doped silicate glass is characterized by doping 0.01-1mol% of Tm3+ ion to a glass composition consisting of 65-95mol% of SiO2, metal(II) oxides containing one or more of ZnO, BaO, SrO and PbO, 1-15mol% of metal(IV) oxide containing one or two of SnO2 and TiO2, wherein 3-30mol% of oxygen(O) in the glass composition is substituted for fluorine(F). Also, 0.5-5mol% of at least one selected from K2O, Rb2O3 and Cs2O, and 1-15mol% of one or two of In2O3 and Sb2O3 are added to the above glass composition. The resultant silicate glass is used for laser resonator, optical fiber laser, optical fiber amplifier, and planar waveguide optical amplifier.
