The clamping device has a clamp mechanism (1) providing a given clamp force for holding the steering column in a required position, an electric motor (2) and an intermediate gearing (3) for delivering the clamp force to a clamp bolt (4) fitted with a clamp disc (10). A control device for controlling the clamp force has a flexible elastic rod-shaped component,coupled to the electric motor so that the latter is controlled by its flexure, e.g. so that the motor is disconnected when a flexure threshold is reached.
