PURPOSE: A method for controlling operation of a compressor of a refrigerator is provided to prevent explosion of the refrigerator due to leakage of R600a refrigerant by sensing whether the compressor is out of order using operating time and opening of a refrigerator door and cutting off power supply to prevent electric spark if the compressor is abnormal. CONSTITUTION: A method comprises the steps of: a first step operating a compressor at normal operation status, and determining whether a refrigerator door is opened if a user selects an operation mode; a second step determining whether continuous operating time of a compressor is over fixed time if opening of the refrigerator door is not sensed in the first step; and a third step cutting off power supply to a refrigerator to stop operation of the compressor if the continuous operating time of the compressor is determined to be over the fixed time in the second step. The power supply is cut off if the compressor has continuously worked more than two hours without opening the refrigerator door to prevent explosion due to electric spark if the R600a refrigerant is leaked.
