A carrier tape (122) for receiving, seating, storing and transporting components (100) having an upper surface (108), a lower surface (112), four corners (116) and four side surfaces (104). The tape (122) includes a strip of material (124) with a plurality of pocket (128). Each pocket (128) includes a plurality of corner guides (146) with angled engagement members (148, 150) for guiding, centering and supporting a component (100) by its lower peripheral corner (120) without any other contact between the component (100) and the pocket (128). The pocket (128) may include at least one support shelf (170) positioned so as to contact a corner (116) of the component (100) upon misalignment of the component (100) and thereby prevent further downward movement of the component (100) in the pocket (128).
