A network inventory management system includes an object oriented database (20) for network (26) which receives data from element managers (25, 31) and (32) together with preset allocation data from processor (22) to allow an accurate database of actual and planned requirements as well as a provisioning mechanism for future orders. A display (27) provides a network display in tree form together with bar-type displays relating to the availability of associated network components being displayed to provide a rapid understanding of the status of the appropriate portions of the network.
