Organo-bismuth cpds. and polymers of them, having bacteriostatic activity for application to paper, textiles, etc., are prepd. by reacting an organic polyisocyanate with an organo-bismuth cpd. RaBiX3-a or Ar3BiX2 (wherein a is an integer below 3; R is opt. substd. alkyl with less than 20 C, opt. substd. alkenyl, with less than 20 C, opt. substd. cycloalkyl, or opt. substd. monocyclic aryl; Ar is opt. substd. monocyclic aryl; X is -OOC(R')OH, -OOC(R')NH2 or -S(R')OH, wherein R' indicates a divalent residue, such as opt. substd. and/or branched alkylene with less than 20 C, or analogous alkenyl gp. opt. substd. phenyl or opt. substd. aralkylene).
