This invention relates to a method for measuring characteristics of a surface, especially a finger surface, using a sensor unit comprising at least one stimulation electrode for applying a varying voltage or current signal to the surface, said signal having chosen characteristics, and a number of sensor elements for sensing electrical characteristics of the surface between the stimulation electrode and the sensor element.
