Irregularly shaped steel articles 8, e.g. spiders for universal joints, are uniformly heated in an inductor 4 by rotating them about an axis I-I which extends substantially perpendicular to the magnetic field H generated by the inductor. The inductor 4 comprises two groups of conductors 9 disposed in planes perpendicular the axis I-I, the conductors in the upper planes carrying current in one direction and those in the lower planes carrying current in the opposite direction. In the apparatus shown spiders 8 are mounted on successive spindles 3 of a rotating table 2 and are conveyed thereby through inductor 4 where they are rotated by spindles 3. When they leave inductor 4 their rotation is discontinued they are cooled by sprayer 5 and removed from spindles 3 by a mechanism 6.</p> |
