A developing device includes an agitator (540) rotated in a toner hopper (410). The agitator (540) has a rod portion (512). A first coil spring (542) portion is wound around the first portion (514) of the rod portion in a first direction (A). A second coil spring portion (544) is wound around the second portion (516) of the rod portion in a second direction (B). The first direction (A) is opposite to the second direction (B). The surface of a detector (50) for detecting the presence of toner in the hopper is swept by the agitator (540).
