A device for activating a siren 10 having a control unit 14 containing a microcontroller 16 which communicates with siren 10 via a data circuit 12. The siren 10 generates an alarm when communication via the data circuit 12 is interrupted. Monitoring means 18 is provided to monitor the microcontroller 16 and in the event of a fault in the microcontroller 16 ensure that communication with the siren 10 continues.
