PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a vacancy in a receiving buffer to receive data of one page by compressing already stored data of the receiving buffer when the receiving buffer becomes full. SOLUTION: A printer 1 which has a function whereby data sent from a host apparatus 2 is analyzed, data for one page is stored in the receiving buffer, a range of a plotting area is calculated by analyzing the stored data, and then an appropriate paper size is selected is provided with a control means 25 for forming the vacancy in the receiving buffer by compressing data stored in the receiving buffer when the receiving buffer 26 becomes full.
