PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a garbage treatment machine which can promote recycling by converting a treatment medium into compost, and a method for controlling the agitation of the machine. SOLUTION: The garbage treatment machine which reduces the volume of garbage has a treatment container 20 which can receive the treatment medium mixed with microorganisms and the garbage, and an agitator 30 which is installed in the container 20 and driven in a volume reduction mode for receiving the treatment medium and the garbage in the container to reduce the volume of the garbage or in a drying mode for receiving the treatment medium in the container to dry the medium.
