PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently producing astaxanthin and canthaxanthin from an easily available raw material in large amounts by adding salt to sea water and also adding a vitamin to an alkali without using yeast, fine alga, euphausian, and the like having been required for producing the astaxanthin and the canthaxanthin. SOLUTION: This method for producing the carotenoids is characterized by culturing a microorganism belonging to the family Thraustochyrium in Labyrinthulales to produce and accumulate the carotenoids in the living bodies, collecting the proliferated microorganisms, and extracting the carotenoids in the living bodies.
