FIELD: organic chemistry, chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to method for preparing 5-methoxy-2-(4-methoxy-3,5-dimethyl-2-pyridylmethylthio)- benzimidazole of the formula (I) that represents an intermediate product in synthesis of an antiulcer preparation omeprazole. Method involves interaction of 5-methoxy-2-mercaptobenzimidazole with 4- methoxy-3,5-dimethyl-2-chloropyridine in an aqueous-alcoholic alkaline mixture at heating. After termination of reaction the reaction mass is neutralized, treatment filtration with carbon is carried out, alcohol is distilled off and stirred for 4-8 h.
