A crank-shaft forging press comprises a central tool 14 mounted between the platens 1, 2 with dies 13a, 13b which are closed around a blank disposed vertically in the press to offset a portion of the blank between parts gripped by dies 3a, 3b, 4a, 4b as the platens are brought together to upset the blank on each side of the tool and as the tool is moved horizontally. The lower platen 1 is fixed and has a pair of pistoncylinder units 6 operating on a cross-beam 10 to which columns (9), Fig. 3 (not shown), are secured. The upper platen 2 is fixed to the columns and the central tool is transversely slidable in a cross-member 5 slidable on the columns by a piston unit (19) operating through linkages (17), (18). The dies 3a, 3b, 4a, 4b are closed by piston-cylinder units 7, 8 to grip the blank at positions for the crank-shaft journals. The dies 13a, 13b of the central tool are closed by piston-cylinder units 15, 16 and the tool 14 moved by the units 15. The blank may be plain or have constrictions and is heated in a vertical position in a localized action furnace, e.g. induction heating. The heated blank is then transferred by crane into the press by lowering through holes 11, 12 in the platens. The top throw is preferably formed first. Before forging the blank is rotated either in the furnace or the press so as to align the offsetting direction with the desired throw direction. The forging is performed in two steps which comprise, firstly, partially upsetting the blank and completely offsetting the crank-pin portion and, secondly, completing the upsetting and shaping the crank webs in the dies of the central tool 14 and the journal clamping dies 3a, 3b, 4a, 4b. |
