A holder for a stick of material e.g. lipstick comprises a godet 21, an inner sleeve 23 and an outer sleeve 31, the sleeves being relatively rotatable, and the godet having two lugs 25 received in longitudinal slots in the inner sleeve and in two helical grooves in the outer sleeve. The inner sleeve has surfaces 48, 45 against which resiliently deformable tongues 44, 44A of the outer sleeve bear to prevent movement of the stick when not being used. An alternative embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) has the tongues on the inner sleeve, the tongues in this instance having their outermost surfaces of a greater diameter than the inner surfaces of the outer sleeve against which the tongues abut. The bearing surfaces may be cylindrical or frusto-conical. The inner sleeve may alternatively have helical slots and the outer sleeve may have longitudinal grooves.
