PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary solenoid which is equipped with a coil that is cylindrical and much simpler than a conventional one which is wound on a specially shaped form. SOLUTION: The rotary solenoid which is equipped with the coil 6, one or more pairs of electro-magnetic poles 4 and 5 which are formed concentrical with the coil 6 as confronted with each other from the end faces of the coil 6, and a permanent magnet rotor 2 which has the paired poles the same in number with the electro-magnetic poles 4 and 5 and is arranged in a freely rotatable manner between the poles 4 and 5 as separated from them by a small gap. Therefore, the coil 6 is cylindrical, so that it is separately formed and much simpler than a conventional one which is wound on a specially shaped form. The unit coil 6, the electromagnetic poles 4 and 5, the rotor 2, a bearing and the like can be disassembled into unit components, so that the unit components can be easily recycled. While no electric power is applied to the rotary solenoid, a force of constraint is produced by the attraction between the rotor 2 and the electromagnetic poles 4 and 5, so that the rotor 2 can be held even after an electric power is stopped, and a pulse current is applied only when the solenoid is in operation, a useless energy such as an electric power used for holding the rotor can be saved, and the rotary solenoid becomes energy-saving.
