PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a telephone system for interconnecting a plurality of main units over a communication line which is capable of managing its own resources en bloc as a single system. SOLUTION: The telephone system uses a specified main unit as a main station. The main unit has the function for controlling information of a plurality of button telephones en bloc. Another main unit constitutes a sub-station and has an independent mode for controlling functions of button telephones accommodated in the sub-station independent of the main station, a remote mode for entrusting the control of the button telephones accommodated in the sub-station to the main station, and a mode switching means for switching over the independent mode and the remote mode according to the condition of a communication line.
