PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a charge transfer element which lowers a driving frequency and efficiently and sufficiently transfers charges between a plurality of transfer registers and a driving method therefor. SOLUTION: The charge transfer element is constituted by arranging the plurality of transfer registers H1 and H2 in parallel, being electrically separately from the transfer electrodes 1S and 1T, and 2S and 2T of the other transfer registers H2 adjacent to transfer electrodes 1S and 1T, and 2S and 2T of the transfer registers H1, and making at least some of transfer electrodes 1S and 1T, and 2S and 2T of the respective transfer registers H1 and H2 overlap with transfer electrodes of other mutually opposite transfer registers. The transfer electrodes 1S and 1S which overlap with each other are given a potential difference and electric charges are transferred from one transfer register H1 to the other transfer register H2 to drive the charge transfer element.
