PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce luminance irregularity caused by fluctuation in the characteristics of electric discharging cells of a PDP. SOLUTION: The PDP is provided with a plurality of first electrodes and a plurality of second electrodes which are alternatively arranged on a substrate, a plurality of third electrodes which are arranged along the direction crossing the first and the second electrodes and electric discharging cells which are constituted at the crossing portions of the first, the second and the third electrodes. In the driving method of the PDP, sustaining pulses VYCP and VXCP, which are used to conduct sustaining electric discharging of the discharging cells in a selection state have waveforms having tilted portions 161 and 171 that are rising from first voltage to second voltage and flat portions 162 and 172 that are following the tilted portions and held at the second voltage. The voltage gradient of the portions 161 and 171 is made sufficient to generate instantaneous sustaining electric discharges. The time width of the portions 162 and 172 is made sufficient to accumulate space electric charges, which are residual in the discharging cells, as wall electric charges. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
