1283015 Preparation of 2,4,7-trinitrofluorenone INDUSTRIAL DYESTUFF CO 19 April 1971 [10 April 1970] 25610/71 Heading C2C 2,4,7-Trinitrofluorenone is recovered from a mixture thereof with its isomers and other nitration products of fluorenone by adding water to a solution of the mixture in sulphuric acid, nitric acid or a mixture of sulphuric and nitric acids, thereby selectively precipitating the required product. The precipitate may be separated and washed with aqueous sulphuric acid, nitric acid or an aqueous mixture of sulphuric and nitric acids in approximately the same proportions as in the solution to remove any isomers or other fluorenone nitration products adhering to the required product. The 2,4,7-trinitrofluorenone is obtained by reacting fluorenone with an acid nitration mixture comprising nitric acid and sulphuric acid, there being from 15 to 40 moles of nitric acid per mole of fluorenone and maintaining the reaction mixture at a temperature below its reflux temperature.
