PURPOSE: A method for preventing the interference of tools with large and small diameters at an automatic tool changer for a machine tool is provided to prevent the interference of tools with large and small diameters attached at a tool magazine with the tools with large and small diameters to be changed. CONSTITUTION: Tools in a magazine are divided into groups having a large diameter and a small diameter at the operation(S20), respectively. A dummy number for the tool is assigned to an idling main shaft(S30). It is determined whether a command for the tool change is inputted(S40). When the command is inputted, it is determined whether the group of the commanded tool is same to that of the tool of the main shaft(S50). When the group of the commanded tool is not same to that of the tool of the main shaft, the dummy tool is exchanged with the tool at the main shaft(S60). When the group of the commanded tool is same to that of the tool of the main shaft or the dummy tool is exchanged with the tool at the main shaft, the dummy tool at the main shaft is exchanged with the commanded tool(S70).
