PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop a method for carrying out oxidation of an alcohol, such as Swern oxidation and Corey-Kim oxidation without worrying about irritating odor and unpleasant odor. SOLUTION: This method for oxidizing the alcohol compound involves bringing the alcohol compound into contact with a sulfoxide compound represented by formula [1] (wherein, R<SP>1</SP>is a hydrocarbon group having≥7 total number of carbons at a linear carbon bond part obtained by not counting the number of carbons at branched parts and counting the number of carbons at the shortest part in a cyclic part; R<SP>2</SP>is an alkyl group, an aryl group or an aralkyl group), or a sulfide compound represented by the formula [2]: R<SP>1</SP>-S-R<SP>2</SP>(wherein, R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are the same as the above).
