摘要 <p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a spatial light modulator which spatially modulates incident light by using a magneto-optical effect, and of which the power consumption, heat generation, and voltage are small. <P>SOLUTION: The element part 2 of the spatial light modulator 1 is provided with; a magnetic layer 11 including a plurality of pixels 11a which are made of a magneto-optical material, whose directions of magnetization are independently set respectively, and which rotate incident light in the direction of polarization in accordance with the direction of magnetization; a piezo-electric layer 14 which is made of a piezo-electric material and applies stress to each pixel 11a in the magnetic layer 11 by distorting itself; and a plurality of 1st conductive layers 13 and a plurality of 2nd conductive layers 15 which hold the piezo-electric layer 14 in-between and are arranged so as to cross at the positions corresponding to each pixel 11a, and provides an electric field to generate the distortion of the part corresponding to each pixel 11a in the piezo-electric layer 14 by being applied with a predetermined voltage.
