PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photoreceptor having high durability, high performance and high reliability in which excellent printing durability is obtained and variance in the potential characteristics is eliminated. SOLUTION: The photoreceptor is obtained by forming an organic photosensitive layer 3 on a conductive substrate 2 and depositing a surface protective layer 4 comprising amorphous silicon carbide by a catalytic CVD method on the organic photosensitive layer 3. The catalyst material used for the catalytic CVD method is composed of a catalyst element selected from Ta, W and Mo, and the catalyst element is incorporated by from 0.4 ppm to 14% atomic ratio into the amorphous silicon carbide.
