PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating agent for finishing a butt end face having unevennesses smooth and to provide a coating means. SOLUTION: The coating composition for the butt end face of a planar material has (1)≤1.2 ratio (fluidization ratio) of a spread diameter (mm) of the coating composition on a plate surface after 1 min and 3 min when 100 mL of the coating composition is collected in a cylindrical container and emptied onto the plate having the smooth surface and≤200 nm spread diameter after 3 min and (2)≤1.0% water absorption coefficient of the coated film.
