The method involves starting a special ramp in addition or alternative to an original engagement ramp depending on events to reduce the synchronous revolution rate dwell time. When the shift element to be engaged reaches the synchronous revolution rate during the original ramp a timer of defined value is started. When the timer reaches the defined value the special ramp is started immediately irrespective of the applied original ramp value. The method involves starting a special ramp (D) in addition to or as an alternative to the original engagement ramp (B) depending on events, so that the dwell time at the synchronous revolution rate is reduced. When the shift element to be engaged reaches the synchronous revolution rate during the original engagement ramp a timer of defined value (C) is started. When the timer reaches the defined value the special ramp is started immediately irrespective of the applied value of the original ramp.
