PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shaft excavating method which carries out excavation of a shaft while using a large excavating reaction force of an excavator, without providing a complicated device or complicated steps before and after excavation, for using the reaction force, and to provide the excavator. SOLUTION: According to the shaft excavating method, excavation of the shaft with a predetermined depth, discharge of excavated soil, and reinforcement of an excavated wall surface with a liner, are repeatedly carried out to pursue the excavation. In the method, the excavator 1 provided with a digger 11 for excavating the ground, on a leg body 2 (support body), is mounted on a bottom surface 102 of the shaft, and a boom 115 of a hydraulic shovel 110 arranged on the ground holds a base-side end of a telescopic arm 120, followed by pressing the excavator 1 downward by means of a tip portion 122 of the telescopic arm 120.
