1364342 Building material composition QUAKER OATS CO 2 Feb 1972 [3 Feb 1971] 4965/72 Heading C1H [Also in Division C3] A bound aggregate building material composition is produced by forming a first mixture of monomeric furfuryl alcohol (99À46-99À89 wt. per cent) and a silane coupling agent (0À54- 0À11 wt. per cent), forming a second mixture of aggregate (e.g. sand) and acidic catalyst and mixing 2-20 wt. per cent of first mixture with 98 to 80 wt. per cent of the second mixture. The silane is of the general formula R<1> being CnH2n, n = 3-6, R<11> = aryl, substituted aryl, alkyl or heteroalkyl and X = amino, mercapto, epoxy, or glycidoxy. The acid catalyst which polymerizes the furfuryl alcohol to a resin (e.g. toluene sulphonic acid, phosphoric acid, ammonium chloride, ammonium sulphate, ammonium trichloroacetate, ammonium phosphate, ammonium nitrate) is present in an amount of from 5% to 50% by weight of the monomeric binder. In a modification 2 to 10 wt. per cent of the first mixture is replaced by an aqueous urea-formaldehyde mixture containing 5 to 25 wt. per cent water. |
