The cloth clamp (32) clamps and then re-presses the wash cloth (12) to clamp the cloth automatically during the stand-still phase thus preventing cloth movement until releasing the cloth for the transport phase of the cleaning operation. The pressdown (16) can expand towards the machine cylinder so as to press the cloth round this and wash beam (2) can move to and fro to press the cloth down. The clamp (32) is activated pneumatically, electrically or hydraulically. The clamp (32) has one element (34) fixed to the wash beam and a second element (36) fixed to the guide (26) and the elements can be converged and pressed together by moving the wash beam and in this way clamp a cloth sector onto the cylinder. Moving the beam back spreads the clamp elements apart.
