<p>The invention relates to a new propellant composition for aerosols useful in medical inhalant devices such as a metered dose inhaler (or MDI). The propellant features helium as its primary ingredient, preferably at least about 65% and most preferably at or around 100% by weight of the propellant composition, and can be used in a variety of applications since it is both inert and environmentally safe. The propellant is utilized advantageously as a safe and environmentally friendly alternative to many current propellants including those based on hydro fluorocarbons (e.g., HFA), fluorocarbons (e.g., CFC), or hydrocarbons (e.g. butane and propane) . Aerosol formulations including the new propellant are provided and a method for their use to treat various medical ailment, including bronchial asthma, and the formulations are useful in the delivery of bronchodilators and other suitable substaces for these therapeutic methods.</p> |
