<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To satisfactorily charge a photoreceptor by relieving the rapid emission of charging acceleration particles held between a charging member and a photoreceptor which is in contact with this, thereby preventing the effect of the transfer of the charging acceleration particles to the charging member via the photoreceptor, and to enable satisfactory image formation free of light shield by enabling image exposure free of light shield after exposure. <P>SOLUTION: A charging device has a charging roller which is in contact with a photoreceptor drum. With the charging acceleration particles held in a charging nip where the charging roller and the photoreceptor drum are in contact with each other, the charging device charges the surface of the photoreceptor drum with a charging bias applied to the charging roller. In order to relieve the rapid emission of the charging acceleration particles from the charging roller during the application of the charging bias, slopes corresponding to equal to or longer than time required for the particles to pass through the charging nip on the surface of the charging roller are provided when potential rises and falls in the charging bias voltage wave-form. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
