PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image recording material having low fog (low Dmin), high density (high Dmax) and an excellent silver tone. SOLUTION: The image recording material comprises on a support at least a reducible silver salt, a reducing agent, a binder and a compound represented by formula (1) wherein X, Y and W are each a substituent; n is 0 or 1; when n is 1, the C*-L bond cleaves in development and then the L-Z bond cleaves; when n is 0, the C*-Z bond cleaves in development; and Z is a residue derived from a photographically useful compound.
