PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material for an organic electroluminescent element (EL element) having high color purity and capable of providing the organic EL element emitting blue-based light, and to provide the organic EL element using the material. SOLUTION: The material for the organic EL element comprises a compound having a specific structure having a fluorine-substituted phenyl or phenylene group bonded to nitrogen. The EL element contains the material for the organic EL element in at least one layer of an organic thin membrane in the EL element having the organic thin membrane layer comprising one layer or two or more layers sandwiched between a cathode and an anode.
