A first control unit (ECU1) controls the hydraulic brakes and in the event of a fault in the unit indicates this to a second control unit (ECU2) which controls the back-up system (RFE). On a system failure compressed gas reservoir (5) supplies a cylinder (6), the rear chamber of which is supplied with brake fluid from a reservoir (31). This depresses the cylinder piston which compresses the brake fluid to operate the brakes (VL,VR,HL,HR).
