<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means for reducing a power consumption without degrading the visibility of a display panel of a printer. <P>SOLUTION: An LED, a back light of a liquid-crystal display panel, is switched off when an initial setting is made after a printer is started (S11). The LED remains off when the printer is in a condition being unable to be operated or not in a condition of abnormal warning since printing is possible (S12: No). However, the LED is switched on (S13) when an error or warning condition occurs (S12: Yes).
