METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING HOLEY FIBER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a holey fiber with increased strength and low OH absorption loss. SOLUTION: Since chlorine is present in the gas filled into pores 10h formed in a quartz preform 10 for an optical fiber, OH groups diffusing in a core during drawing the quartz preform 10 chemically react with the chlorine and decreases. Or, since gas containing chlorine fills the pores 10h instead of air, growth of fine cracks in the optical fiber due to water can be suppressed. This results in a high-strength holey fiber with low OH absorption loss. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
