PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a foreign matter detecting device for the surface of a light transmission body which can accurately detect a foreign matter such as a rain droplet or the like adhered to the surface of the body such as a windshield for an automobile while an imaging means remains usable for another application. SOLUTION: The foreign matter detecting device for the surface of the light transmission body is constituted by being provided with an imaging means 7 having an imaging element 71 and arranged so as to image outward from the inside of the translucent material 1; an optical means 9 arranged at the inside of the material to focus the sight of the outer surface 1a of the material on the part of the imaging region of the element; and a detecting means 8 for detecting the matter on the outer surface of the material from the information corresponding to the outer surface of the material obtained by the element.
