PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a system for determining allowable dimensions for a defect of a structural member beforehand and thereby able to show a target value for inspection precision, and to enable the selection of an optimum inspection method for the structural member. SOLUTION: The method and system are constituted by being provided with a first process (S1-1, S1-2) which computes final dimensions of the crack of the structural member using a stress acting on the structural member and the fracture toughness value of a material which forms the structural member, and a second process (S1-3, S1-4) which finds dimensions of the crack allowable in a state before a specified number of repetition of loading from the stress and the crack progress characteristic of the material which forms the structural member, considering the final dimensions of the crack computed in the first process as a limit condition.
