A delivery apparatus (10) includes a tubular sheath (12) including proximal, intermediate (20), and distal (18) portions defining a lumen (16). A wall of the distal (18) portion is transparent, allowing observation of the lumen within the distal portion. The distal portion terminates in a rounded distal tip (14) including a plurality of leaflets (24). A self-expanding stent (50) is disposed within the intermediate portion (20), and a bumper member (30) i s slidably disposed within the lumen (16) proximate the stent. Before use, the sheath (12) is retracted to bump the stent (50) forward into the distal portion until the stent (50) is observed within the distal portion (18). Aft er the apparatus has been pre-loaded, the distal portion (18) is advanced into a blood vessel (100), e.g., across a stenosis (102), and the sheath (12) is retracted, causing the leaflets (24) to open and allow the stent (50) to be deployed, whereupon the stent (50) automatically expands to dilate the stenosis (102).
