<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine control system for improving combustion characteristics by evolving a powerful gas flow in a combustion chamber in response to operation conditions. <P>SOLUTION: The engine control system comprises at least two independent intake ports 14a, 14b connected to a combustion chamber 15, and two intake valves 12a, 12b and exhaust valves 13a, 13b. In the inside of the 1st intake port 14a, there are provided up and down flow-paths 22a, 22b respectively with a demarcation partition wall therebetween, an intake control valve 25 to open/ close the down-side flow-path 22b, and an intake control valve 26 to open/close the 1st intake port 14b. There is further provided a controller 50 for controlling open/close of the intake control valves 25, 26.
